Ippon and Nihon shobu Kumite Rules

 

The Tournament Director reserves the right to combine divisions where he sees fit.

  • All contestants must wear a clean, white karate gi.

  • Toenails and fingernails must be trimmed short.

 

 

IPPON and NIHON SHOBU KUMITE RULES

  1. Mouthpiece and groin protector are mandatory in all kumite matches. 

  2. Head and shin guards for children 14 years old and under is okay.  All others not allowed.

  3. Female chest guard protectors are optional.

  4. Fabric or WKF type fist guards only.

  5. Only safety glasses with a restraining band or soft contact lenses are allowed.  All other types of eyewear are not acceptable.

  6. Ippon Shobu for all beginner & intermediate divisions: one-point (ippon) or two waza ari (two ½-points)

  7. Nihon Shobu for all advance and black belt divisions:  2-ippon, 1-ippon and 2 waza ari, or 4 waza ari.

  8. All ippon shobu bouts are 2-minutes running time.

  9. All nihon shobu bouts are 3-minutes running time.

  10. In case of a tie, sudden-death, one minute overtime.

 

 

IPPON & NIHON SHOBU CONTACT RULES

  1. Contact to the face, groin, or throat will result in a warning: keikoku - no point awarded.

  2. A second contact will result in hansoku chui - ½ point penalty.

  3. A third contact will result in disqualification.

  4. Depending on the severity of the contact, a contestant may be penalized with a hansoku chui - ½ point or may immediately be disqualified from the match pending official's decision.

  5. Dangerous and/or uncontrolled techniques such as: uncontrolled spinning hook-kick, open-hand technique to the eyes, or throwing the opponent without control, will result in a penalty.

  6. A punch thrown to the head area that misses but passes through the target by at least one fist will be considered as a contact penalized with a keikoku, no points awarded.

  7. Excessive contact to any area of the body can result in immediate disqualification pending official's decision.

  8. Any blood resulting from excessive contact will result in immediate disqualification pending official's decision.

  9. Light controlled contact to the body is permitted.

  10. Face skin touch is allowed in the adult black belt divisions only.

 

 

JOGAI RULES:  STEPPING OUT OF BOUNDS

  1. 1st time out of bounds will result in a warning – KEIKOKU.  No point awarded.

  2. 2nd time out of bounds will result in HANSOKU CHUI.  No point awarded.

  3. 3rd time out of bounds will result in HANSOKU or loss of the match.

 

DIVISION CATEGORIES

  • Beginner:  7th Kyu and below

  • Intermediate:  6th , 5th , and 4th Kyu

  • Brown Belt:  3rd Kyu, 2nd Kyu, and 1st Kyu

  • Advance:  black and brown belts combined

  • Black Belt:  black belts only
